Who would have ever thought that the insane minds behind Monty
Python’s Flying Circus, Life of Brian and Monty Python and The Holy
Grail would graduate from being one of the biggest cult comedy
favorites world wide to the Broadway stage? That’s exactly what
happened with the Monty Python musical built for the stage – Spamalot.
The original comedy team that made up Monty Python consisted of John
Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and
Michael Palin. Their brand of comedy first debuted on the BBC in
October of 1969 and they didn’t shy away from pushing every imaginable
boundary. In fact, their sketches from all those years ago are still
considered edgy even today – nearly 40 years later.
Billed on their promotional materials as a “musical comedy lovingly
ripped off from the Motion Picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and
written by Python alum Eric Idle, Spamalot is a welcome entry into the
comedy musical realm – especially for fans of the particular brand of
off color comedy that the boys from Python made famous. The original
Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols, was nominated for
fourteen Tony Awards in 2005 and walked away with three of them
including Best New Musical.
That original cast included such names as Tim Curry (perhaps best
known as Frank in The Rocky Horror Picture Show), David Hyde Pierce (of
Frasier fame) and the hilarious Hank Azaria who delighted the audience
as the lovable maid in the film The Birdcage. American Idol runner up
Clay Aiken replaced David Hyde Pierce in the role of Sir Robin and has
quite possibly found his musical niche. Other well known names who have
appeared on the stage in this production include former boy band member
and Dancing with the Stars winner Drew Lachey who may have finally
surpassed the popularity of and stepped out of the shadow of his
brother, Nick.
As you can imagine with a pedigree like that, Spamalot tickets
are not always easy to come by. Many fans wait in long lines for hours
on end for tickets to see this hilarious musical comedy but you are one
